Physics Chapter 3 Page 78

I had a quick question over the explanation to discrete question 8 on page 76. Wouldn't releasing energy increase the temperature inside the ballon? Because the gas performs work inside the balloon - releasing energy - increasing the temperature ?

It sounds like you have a clear understanding of the fact that the gas is performing work its surroundings. This means that it is transferring energy (I think of it as "spending" energy, which helps me make more sense of it). Remember, work requires energy. Thus, the gas has lost some energy which means the particles will be moving more slowly which equates to a lower temperature. Now, keep in mind that this energy didn't disappear but was transferred. This may be where the confusion is coming in. Since we are only concerned about the gas here (because of the roman numeral options), we don't need to worry about where that energy is going, only that it has left the gas. Energy leaving the gas means that the gas has lowered its temperature.
