Metabolism of Alternative Fuels

In Lesson 13 when talking about the metabolism of alternative fuels, specifically proteins, it's discussed how glutamate is a glucogenic amino acid because it can be converted into alpha-ketoglutarate.

But when talking about Lysine ( which is ketogenic) lysine is converted into saccharopine which is then converted into glutamate according to the video. Glutamate can then be converted into acetoacetyl -CoA which is then used for cholesterol synthesis and ketogenesis.

So can glutamate be both a glucogenic and ketogenic amino acid?

earlier in the lesson quiz it was stated that Lysine and leucine were the ONLY ketogenic amino acids...I'm just a little confused

Lysine can be converted into glutamate, though this typically takes place in neurons and its purpose is to generate glutamate to act as an excitatory neurotransmitter.

In terms of amino acid metabolism, lysine and leucine are the only exclusively ketogenic amino acids. (If lysine were converted to glutamate and then metabolized, glutamate is glucogenic.

Phenylalanine, isoleucine, threonine, tryptophan, and tyrosine are both glucogenic and ketogenic. The remainder are exclusively glucogenic.
