Ch. 5 Fluids passage at end of chapter # 4

I was wondering why the height h is 1cm? I know the given dimensions of the cube is 1cm, so that would make the difference from the top of the cube to the bottom of the cube 1cm. But in the passage it says the depth h "below the surface of the bulb within the liquid?"

We don't need the depth below the surface of the liquid, we need the difference in height from the top of the cube to the bottom of the cube, since that difference in height (difference in depth) is what causes the pressure differential.
