A student asked us: "If protein synthesis is in the N to C direction, why is the answer C to N?"

The reason for this is that, while standard peptide synthesis occurs in the N to C direction, solid state peptide synthesis occurs in the C to N direction. This can be determined from the passage, which tells us that the C terminus is covalently bound and anchored to the bead, which prevents peptide addition from occurring there.
