Diagnostic CP Q20

Post by NS_Tutor_Sophia » Thu Oct 11, 2018 8:49 pm

A student recently asked us about Diagnostic Chemical Processes Question 20: "If the chemical formula is SiO2, where do the 4 oxygens come from?"

This is a great question! In a network solid, the silicon atom in silica forms four bonds to oxygen: two of these to the two oxygen atoms in silica, and two to neighboring oxygen atoms from other silica molecules. Likewise, its own oxygen atoms bond with nearby silica atoms, which helps form the entire network.
