Can you please tell me how to interpret the graph and why A is correct?

How were you thinking about this one? I'll try to address the graph generally, but it's easier to address if I know exactly where you confusion arose from -- that way I can target my response more specifically instead of aiming super broad.

The graph shows a muscle power curve (as in how does the power exerted by a muscle change) as well as a curve plotting the force generated by the muscle (x axis) and the retraction velocity (y axis).

Since work is equal to power x time and we're told that the duration of the contraction is the same, we can just choose whichever point has the smallest power and that'll be our answer. Point A has the smallest power and so is correct.

I was confused a the two slopes (shape ) of the graph - I did not know which part (A,B,C,D) referred to in the muscle contraction.

I assumed A was right because it was smallest, I was not sure about D though because it seemed to be a negative slope

Oh, I see. So slope isn't relevant here, it's just the coordinates on the y-axis and choosing the correct graph from the label on the graph itself. We want to choose whichever y-coordinate is the smallest since that'll correlate with the lowest power.
