Bio Qbank 3 question 11

"The slender giant moray (Strophidon sathete) is a species of large marine eel that is technically classified within the moray family. Like most oceanic creatures, the giant moray has adapted to have different intracellular solute concentrations than freshwater animals. If one of these marine eels were placed in a typical river, its cells would:..."

I understand that there is going to be more dissolved solute in the cell so water will move in and the cell will swell. Wouldn't this make it a hypotonic environment, though, since water is moving into the cell?

Hi vgp1993,

Yes! It would be a hypotonic environment. However, the answer choice says that the cells would be hypertonic to their environment, which is logically equivalent. For an analogy, consider the contrast between human body temperature and the environment on a freezing day. You could accurately say both that the body is in a cold environment and that the body is warm relative to its environment. The reasoning is similar here. All things being equal, it probably is generally the case that the terms "hypotonic" and "hypertonic" are usually applied to the surrounding environment, but there's nothing logically incorrect about specifying hypertonicity relative to the environment, and it is generally a good idea to be aware of crucial small details in the wording of a question.
