NS FL1 CARS #52

A student recently asked, "How does the use of "motorized vehicles" as mentioned in the passage not indicate A is the correct choice?"

While it would be easy to assume that motorized vehicles would increase the speed at which the Scott group was able to complete the expedition, the context in the passage suggests another interpretation. The passage states that "Unfortunately, the Scott Expedition chose to use ponies, motorized vehicles, and human muscle power." It goes on to describe that the Norwegian team "glided to the South Pole and back," while the Scott team arrived "five weeks later." Thus, from the context, we see that the motorized vehicles (along with the other methods of transport that Scott and his men used), despite what we might expect, actually slowed them down on their journey. We must conclude, then, that the motorized vehicles did contribute to the failure, making this the wrong answer for this EXCEPT question.

Hope this helps!
