FL1 CARS Q40

A student recently stated, "In choice C, the avatar responds to the player's input. Meanwhile, choice B seems to disconnect the avatar from the player."

While this analysis is correct, this particular question is asking to choose an option that best reflects Representation by Regulated Interaction (RRI). The passage discusses RRI in paragraphs 2-4. According to the author, "Videogames can represent facts about their fictional subjects by manipulating the way the player interacts with those subjects via Representation by Regulated Interaction. The way the avatar responds to player input represents something about the character. For instance, it is common for the relative mass of a character to be represented to the player by having the avatar move slowly or quickly in response to movement commands." In other words, the key point of RRI is that we are in control of the video game character, but the way the character responds to our controls tells us something about that character. The example given in the passage is mass: if you jumped with a heavier character, they would respond differently than a light character (and so we come to know something about each character). In short, our interaction is regulated by the game.

This understanding of RRI squares well with answer choice B because the character that the user is in control of no longer runs when directed to do so, but instead only shuffles along. Thus the way that the character responds to the user's commands has been regulated.

I hope this helps and good luck!
